Play a retro version of tic-tac-toe (noughts and crosses, tres en raya) against the computer or with two players. Example: tic-tac-toe (noughts and crosses) For tic-tac-toe, a simple upper bound for the size of the state space is 3 9 = 19,683. (There are three states for each cell and nine cells.) This count includes many illegal positions, such as a position with five crosses and no noughts, or a position in which both players have a row of three. Tic-tac-toe (American English), noughts and crosses (Commonwealth English), or Xs and Os, is a paper-and-pencil game for two players, X and O, who take turns marking the spaces in a 3×3 grid. The player who succeeds in placing three of their marks in a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal row is the winner. 3-D Tic-Tac-Toe: qubit.bas: Game of tic-tac-toe in a 4x4x4 cube: Tic-Tac-Toe 1: tictactoe1.bas: Simple version: Tic-Tac-Toe 2: tictactoe2.bas: This version prints out the board: Tower: tower.bas: Towers of Hanoi puzzle: Train: train.bas: Time-speed-distance quiz: Trap: trap.bas: Trap a mystery number—computer gives you clues: 23 Matches.
Introduction
Tic Tac Toe is a casino game based on the actual game by the same name. A reader told me he saw it at Coushatta Casino Resort in Kinder, LA. There are three bets available: X, O, and a tie. Cards marked X or O are drawn randomly on a tic tac toe board to determine the winning outcome.
Rules
- The game utilizes four 52-card decks. Each deck consists of 26 cards marked X and 26 cards marked O.
- Cards are drawn from the shoe and placed on the 9 squares of the tic tac toe board. Cards are placed until there is a winner (X or O with three in a row), or each square on the board is covered, whichever happens first.
- A winning bet on X or O shall pay even money. In the event of a tie, bets on X or O shall lose half.
- A winning bet on a tie shall pay 14 to 1.
Analysis
The following table shows the probability of 0 to 9 X cards, and the probability of a tie given that number of Xs. The first column is the number of Xs out of 9. The second column is the probability of the given number of Xs on the card. The third column is the conditional probability of a tie, given the number of Xs for that row. The fourth column is the product of the second and third column. The lower right cell shows the probability of a tie is 6.3735%.

If there are 4 Xs and 5 Os, then there are combin(9,4)=126 ways to place the Xs and Os on the board. Of those 126, 16 result in a tie. The image below shows the three tie patterns, and the number of ways each can be rotated or reflected. So the probability of a tie, given 4 or 5 Xs, is 16/126 = 12.70%.
Once it can be accepted that the probability of a tie is 6.3735%, the rest is easy. The probability that there is not a tie is 100%-6.3735% = 93.6265%. The probability of X or O winning is each half of that, or 46.8133%.
The following table shows the probability and contribution to the return of each outcome of the X and O bets. The lower right cell shows a house edge of 3.19%.

Tic Tac Toe Rules
To begin with each player receives two hole cards and the dealer places three face-up community cards in a row on the table. There now follows the first betting round during which players can:
- Fold – discard the card
- Check – opt not to bet but remain in the hand
- Call – match the biggest bet placed so far
- Raise – increase the bet
The dealer now places more community cards on the table in the following order – a lower row of three, then two cards to make up the square, then a final card in the centre. You now have a 3 x 3 grid of community cards. After each grid deal, there's another round of betting.
Assuming two players remain after the final betting round, the showdown takes place and hands are compared. Those hands must comprise both hole cards plus a row of three cards from the grid in any direction – horizontal, vertical of diagonal, once the Tic Tac Toe moniker.

Variations to this game usually feature more hold cards dealt to the players but their final hands may still only contain two.
